Climate change is driving more frequent and intense events, particularly in the tropics and subtropics, where the risks to vulnerable populations and outdoor workers are growing. However, there has been little understanding of the meteorological drivers behind these events.

A recent study by a team from the University of Leeds and the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology sheds new light on this issue. By analyzing patterns of recent rainfall and their impact on land conditions, the researchers have provided the first-ever analysis of how rainfall can interact with dry or moist land to influence the risk of extreme humid heat in tropical regions.

The study reveals that recent rainfall patterns play a critical role in triggering humid heatwaves in these regions. The results show that the risk of humid heatwaves depends on whether the surface environment is drier or wetter. In drier regions, humid heatwaves are more likely during or just after periods of enhanced rainfall, while in wetter regions, they tend to follow at least two days of suppressed rainfall.

This difference arises because rainfall increases moisture in soils making conditions more humid. By contrast, less rainfall and fewer clouds allow the land to warm, thereby increasing temperatures. The researchers used weather and climate data from 2001 to 2022 and satellite observations to distinguish between wetter and drier days, calculating how likely a heatwave was to occur after these different rainfall conditions.

The implications of this study are significant. Humid heatwaves can be damaging and even fatal to human health, especially in tropical regions where the air temperature is already high. The new understanding provided by this research highlights the potential for improved humid heat early warning systems, using near real-time satellite observations for soil moisture and rainfall.

Lead author Dr Lawrence Jackson emphasized the importance of developing such systems: “With climate change driving more frequent and intense humid heat events, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions, the risks to vulnerable populations and outdoor workers are increasing. Our research highlights the potential for improved humid heat early warning systems, using near real-time satellite observations for soil moisture and rainfall.”

The researchers hope that their findings will contribute to the development of more effective strategies for mitigating the impacts of extreme humid heatwaves. As Cathryn Birch, Professor in Meteorology and Climate, noted: “We need to urgently cut greenhouse gas emissions but also need improved early warning systems for humid heat.” John Marsham, a co-author and Professor of Atmospheric Science, added: “Our results focus on the daily timescale for these heatwaves. An obvious next step would be to extend our analysis to hourly time scales which might allow us to work towards near real-time predictions with all the benefits that would bring to vulnerable communities.”

Pregnant women who suffer from metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), previously known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, are more likely to give birth prematurely. A new study published in the journal eClinicalMedicine has found that these women have a significantly higher risk of preterm birth, and this increased risk cannot be attributed solely to their weight or obesity.

According to the research conducted by Karolinska Institutet, one in five people in Sweden may have MASLD, while globally, it could affect as many as three out of ten individuals. Common risk factors for developing the disease include metabolic disorders like type 2 diabetes and being overweight or obese. The study’s findings are based on Swedish registry data and included a total of 240 births among women with MASLD, along with 1140 matched births from the general population.

Alarmingly, the research revealed that women with MASLD were more than three times as likely to give birth prematurely compared to those without the disease. This increased risk persisted even after adjusting for factors such as weight and metabolic disorders. The study’s lead author suggests that this association may not solely be due to a high BMI, implying that the liver disease itself could have negative effects on pregnancy outcomes.

Moreover, women with MASLD had a 63 percent higher risk of caesarean section compared to the control group. However, this increased risk seemed to be explained by their high BMI, as no significant difference was observed when comparing them to overweight or obese women without fatty liver disease.

While the study’s findings are concerning, it is essential to note that MASLD itself did not increase the risk of congenital malformations in the children born to these women. The authors acknowledge that their research may have been influenced by other factors and emphasize the importance of closely monitoring pregnant women with MASLD to reduce the risk of complications.
